SURVEY: See Me – Be Part of the Change

The Mental Health Foundation, See Me and Glasgow Caledonian University are undertaking a ground breaking research project.

The survey will enable researchers to understand how people living with severe, complex and/or enduring mental health issues experience stigma and discrimination.

This research will only be a success if it represents people from all races, cultures and backgrounds, and so we are looking for participants from any of the following 3 categories

  • people from Black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds who have experienced mental health stigma and discrimination to create real change in Scotland; OR
  • people aged 65 and over; OR
  • men aged 18 and over

We are looking for people from the categories above who, within the last year, have experienced a severe, complex and/or enduring mental health issue(s) including:

  • Schizophrenia or other primary psychotic disorder
  • Bipolar or related disorder
  • Obsessive-compulsive or related disorder
  • Disorder specifically associated with stress
  • Dissociative disorder
  • Feeding or eating disorder
  • Personality disorder
  • Severe and/or treatment-resistant depressive disorder
  • Severe and/or treatment-resistant anxiety or fear-related disorder

This research will look to address some of the most pervasive and severe stigma and discrimination that people with mental illnesses face.

  • What stigma and discrimination people have experienced and how often
  • Where in their lives people have experienced it and to what extent
  • What impact these experiences have had on their lives and behaviours
  • How people experience self-stigma
  • What needs to change to improve the lives of people experiencing complex mental health problems

We are inviting people who have received either a formal diagnosis, or who have not been diagnosed formally but believe they may be experiencing one or more of these mental health problems, to participate in online or in person interviews or focus groups, during July and August 2022.

We are offering a £15 voucher to every participant as reimbursement for taking the time to participate in the study.

If you would like to participate, you will be asked to read important information about the study, give your consent to take part and fill in a short screening form. You will then be invited to have a discussion with a researcher – either online, in person, or over the phone, or in a small group discussion. It should take no longer than 60 minutes.
