Invitation to Help Develop the Support & Services for Children and Young People’s Mental Health & Wellbeing

Moray Council, NHS Grampian, the Scottish Government and Health Improvement Scotland are looking for help in improving mental health support services for children and young people in your local area. We have already taken some steps to try and improve the support available, for example introducing counselling in schools and also developing some new support services. We want to ensure the changes and investment in new services go on to provide the right support, delivered in the best ways, we want to ensure our services are getting it right for children and young people and to work together to meet all Moray’s young people needs in the future.

We want people from the local community to get involved in giving their views about their experiences of services and of what sorts of services would be helpful locally. We want to hear your voice about your experiences and involve you in making the plans to develop the right services for young people in Moray. We want to build a team that represents all affected by mental health. Together the team will examine what the needs are in moray, how are we responding to that and how we can respond better. The team will go on to suggest solutions to the priorities they have identified and contribute to testing and reviewing those solutions.

This is a great opportunity to ensure everyone affected by mental health is listened to:

  • We want to hear children and young people’s experiences of mental health.
  • We want to hear young people’s experiences of both accessing and receiving support and reasons why support may not have been progressed.
  • We want to hear how families feel when supporting young people experiencing mental health issues, in the early stages, when accessing support and after support provided.
  • We want to know more from the professionals about both the challenges and successes of delivering support and services within Moray and from workers supporting families or children directly as they manage through these challenging periods.
  • We need a range of views, both positive and negative, successful or unsuccessful to know what needs changing and to work together to identify ways to address those changes.

Our team will include all impacted through mental health, these will include:

  • Children and young people to ensure we understand their experiences and needs and are able to learn from their views.
  • Parents who have supported or are currently supporting their children through mental health related challenges moray council responsibilities like Education and children services.
  • NHS Grampian including CAMHS representation, primary care like GPs and health improvement teams.
  • 3rd sector organisations for example Children 1st that work directly with families.
moray council responsibilities like Education and children services.

The initial plan is for the group to begin meeting fortnightly.

My role is to ensure the group is representative of all and that those wishing to contribute are supported to do so. This means spending time with the different partners including parents and young people and seeing how they feel they can best be involved and to consider their availability when planning.

I do not expect everyone to commit to all fortnightly meetings and there may be parts of the process that some people don’t wish to be involved in. To examine our services this way will take time, we are looking to work out our priorities to focus on together, to explore ideas how to improve and then test those ideas to see if we have identified the right solutions. It will take time to do this well so some people may dip in and out of this process at the most appropriate time to them. It may be you wish to be involved in a lot of the activity, it maybe you would like to contribute your experiences only, my role is to assist everyone to take part.
