Every four or five years, Scotland sends the United Nations a Human Rights Report Card. This takes place as part of something called the Universal Periodic Review. It helps other countries around the world make recommendations back to our governments.
Some of the things that have been reported to the UN in the past include:
• The gender pay gap
• Child poverty
• Violence against women
• Protecting children from physical assault
• Access to housing
• Discrimination against Gypsy/Travellers
• Hate crime
• Supporting disabled people’s choice and control in independent living
• Barriers to accessing employment for disabled people
• Climate change and the Sustainable Development Goals
Now it’s time to start preparing the next Human Rights Report Card, ready to send direct to the UN in early 2022.
The last time this happened was in 2017 – and a lot has happened since then. It’s really important that as many different voices and experiences are represented in this latest report.
If you are part of a charity, voluntary organisation, community group or any other civil society organisation, you can get involved in different ways.
