NEWS: Black And Minority Ethnic Communities and mental health

MWH Admin TeamNews

Our partners at See Me are doing excellent work to highlight the inequality faced by those from Black And Minority Ethnic (BAME) communities. In Moray we would love to hear from you if you would like to share thoughts on how we can similarly highlight the barriers and also the solutions to supporting our diverse community. If you have lived experience around the BAME community and want to create change please get in touch.

Over the last few weeks there has been an increased focus on the issue of racism. See Me has highlighted the importance to look at some of the inequalities that BAME communities face and how this impacts mental health, what we can do to make a difference and hear from others who have faced additional stigma and discrimination because of their race.

We all have mental health, and everyone should be treated fairly and with respect, so we can speak opely about whatever we are experiencing, and get the help we need.  But unfortunately this isn’t the case for everyone.

People from BAME communities often face multi-layered stigma which can exacerbate mental health problems and make it harder to access help. Barriers to help such as religion, language, and cultural stigma can make it more difficult for some people to talk about how they  feel, and make it less likely they will  seek support.
