The ALLIANCE has responded to a consultative document from the General Medical Council (GMC) saying that they must ensure that the needs and preferences of those using the health services are at the centre of decision making.
The ALLIANCE has replied to the consultation on “consent and shared decision making” by calling on Doctors to “buy in” to the principles of shared decision making – as it can have a profound impact on the outcomes of people living with long term conditions.

The response also calls on the GMC to revise the draft guidance to include:
- Stronger references to unpaid carers and the role of tools such as Power of Attorney.
- That basic communication issues can create significant barriers to shared decision making.
- That a range of resources must be produced in a variety of accessible formats to explain to people using support and services about shared decision making and the revised guidance.
