End Digital Poverty Day 12th September call out for collaboration: Organisations offering digital inclusion or supporting those with wellbeing needs in Moray

Looking to complement existing digital support activity with local partners, Moray Wellbeing Hub have launched their project ‘Digital Supports for mental health’ as part of End Digital Poverty day this 12th of September.

Kickstarting activity is a call out to community organisations already delivering digital supports to explore collaboration, prevent duplication and improve the networks and materials used in Moray to enable access to support, devices and connectivity.

MWH are also keen to hear from any organisation, group or supporters who encounter people with poor mental health and digital support needs. Their plan is to offer bespoke training, materials and support to these services to increase their confidence as Digital Champions around wellbeing. They are hosting ‘Digital inclusion for wellbeing’, an open lunchtime learning event on the 3rd of October in partnership with Moray Pathways as part of Challenge Poverty week, which is now booking for (visit https://www.tickettailor.com/events/moraywellbeinghub/1004421 ).

For community members themselves, there will soon be a process to signpost people or apply directly for devices and 1-2-1 support. For now, support will be through existing peer-support drop-ins in Forres, Elgin and Buckie with the ambition to grow this in the east and through outreach in the coming months.

Any interested Moray organisations, supporters or individuals are encouraged to contact Moray Wellbeing Hub directly via hello@moraywellbeinghub.org.uk or by calling 01343 576219. Project information will also be updated on MWH website projects page – www.moraywellbeinghub.org.uk/projects/

Drop-ins with digital support from peers:

  • Mondays: Forres Medical Centre 10-12noon
  • Mondays: Linkwood Medical Centre 12.30-2.30pm (bi-weekly from 25th September)
  • Tuesdays: Bow Café Elgin 9.30-11.30am
  • Tuesdays: Buckie Community Hub 1-2.30pm

Digital inclusion means ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to develop their skills and confidence and can access an appropriate device and connectivity to do the things they want to do online.“ – TEC

The project aims to build both community capacity as well as help individuals to gain increased confidence and ability to make use of digital supports for wellbeing and has funding till July 2024 from the Digital Pioneers Mental Health Fund administered by SCVO.

Four ‘Walk of Hope’ events invite community to connect as part of Moray’s Suicide Prevention Awareness Week this September

After a successful first event in 2022, Moray will host four free ‘Walk of Hope’ events this September – Cooper Park Elgin on the 2nd, Grant Park Forres 3rd, Byres Farm Fochabers 9th and new bridge Lossiemouth 10th. Aiming to bring a positive approach to suicide awareness, the event provides an opportunity to remember those lost to suicide, express solidarity to those living with suicidal thoughts, and raise awareness in an inclusive way. Walks start at 5.40am, all are welcome and anyone keen to attend is asked to register for the final details to ensure there is capacity and support.

The event, hosted by local social movement for change Moray Wellbeing Hub, is just one of a range of events that members of the North East Suicide Prevention Working Group have organised for Suicide Awareness Week such as the launch of the annual Moray suicide prevention survey. This includes partners such as Active Recovery Moray, Health & Social Care Moray, Moray Council and Police Scotland.

“Last year we had 21 people join us at Lossiemouth aged from 7 to 70, plus a few friendly dogs. People enjoyed the community approach, there were tears as well as laughter…shared stories as well as silence.” Explains Moray Wellbeing Hub Social Movement & Enterprise Lead Heidi Tweedie.

“This year we have expanded the locations beyond the beach to include, urban, woodland and rural spaces. We hope many more people can join us to see the dawn and give hope around a subject that is painful and still too often taboo.”

The theme for World Suicide Day 2023, as set by the International Association for Suicide Prevention is ‘creating hope through action’. A theme that links strongly with Moray Wellbeing Hub’s ongoing project ‘Collective Action in Wellbeing For Moray 22-25’ funded by the National Lottery Community Fund – Improving Lives. As well as supporting the walk events, the project has resourced community members to receive training and support around mental health activism. Anyone keen to make a change is welcome to join future activity.

For those keen to have their views and ideas on how we can prevent suicide in Moray an online survey is being promoted to gather ideas. Information on this can be found by contacting Moray Wellbeing Hub, or visiting their website news section at www.moraywellbeinghub.org.uk

If you are concerned about your own challenging thoughts or want to be prepared to support someone you care about, a local app is available to support with all the links including how to create a safe plan. This can be downloaded from www.preventsuicideapp.com

NEWS: More funding to help parents and infants at risk

Supporting perinatal and infant mental health

Families across Scotland will benefit from a £1 million investment in charities specialising in mental health and wellbeing support in pregnancy and early years.

The support – provided by the Scottish Government’s Perinatal and Infant Mental Health Fund – will go to 34 charities that help new families take their first steps in raising babies and young children.

It has been estimated that up to 20% of mums and up to 10% of dads are affected by poor mental health in the perinatal period. Between 10-22% of babies and young children also experience mental health difficulties.

The Fund enables organisations to provide one-to-one and group based support and care that parents, carers and new babies need. Over 7,000 parents, expectant parents and infants have been supported by the funded organisations.

Mental Wellbeing Minister Kevin Stewart announced extension of the existing Fund for another year from April 2023 to March 2024 at the current level of funding, over £1 million across the 12 months.
